More than 300 major college football and men’s basketball players are telling the NCAA and college presidents they want a cut of ever-increasing TV sports revenue to fatten scholarships and cover all the costs of getting a degree, with athletes picking up still more grant money when they graduate.

The wait is over. New Zealand is back on top at the Rugby World Cup. The All Blacks survived the last in a string of flyhalf injuries and beat France 8-7 in a gripping final Sunday to become the third two-time champion. Despite being the perennial favorite, New Zealand hadn’t won the World Cup since hosting and winning the inaugural tournament in 1987.

Missouri has taken another step toward leaving the Big 12 Conference and there is interest in the SEC in taking the Tigers. The governing curators at Missouri unanimously gave Chancellor Brady Deaton the authority Friday to move the school out of the Big 12 if he decides that is in the school’s best interest.

In the mid-1990s, TCU was excluded from the Big 12 while its former rivals were invited to the new league. Instead of hanging their heads, the Horned Frogs — who have since been a part of three conferences — kept building athletic programs and upgrading facilities, culminating in a Rose Bowl victory to cap off a perfect 2010 season.

Matt Holliday was in the St. Louis Cardinals’ lineup for their must-win Game 4 of the NL division series against the Philadelphia Phillies. Manager Tony La Russa made out two lineup cards prior to Wednesday’s game, one with Holliday in it and one without him. The star outfielder has been out because of an injured right middle finger.

Former England coach Sven-Goran Eriksson says he has offered David Beckham a chance to join English Championship club Leicester. Beckham’s Major League Soccer contract with the Los Angeles Galaxy is set to expire in November and Eriksson, now in charge at Leicester, says he has discussed a possible linkup with the 36-year-old midfielder.
