Filly Havre de Grace brought Larry Jones and Rick Porter back together in 2011, reuniting a trainer and owner who had endured tragedy three years earlier when filly Eight Belles fatally broke down after finishing second in the Kentucky Derby. Havre de Grace (HA’-vur-duh-grays) restored fun to racing again for the duo after Jones had retired in 2010, forcing Porter to find another trainer.

Jockey Garrett Gomez had surgery Thursday for a broken left heel that will keep him out of the saddle for four to six weeks. A filly by leading sire Kitten’s Joy has brought a top price of $180,000 during the third session of Keeneland’s January Horses of All Ages Sale. Glen Hill Farm purchased the filly, out of the stakes-placed Danzig mare Garden Spot and from the family of Horse of the Year and top sire Mineshaft.

Veteran champion Kauto Star and 2011 winner Long Run are set to renew their rivalry in the Cheltenham Gold Cup in March after being entered for one of the showpiece events of the British horse racing calendar. Trainer Lewis Cenicola, who served as exercise rider for Hall of Fame gelding John Henry in the late 1970s and early `80s, has died at 66. He died Sunday after a long battle with cancer, Santa Anita Park said Tuesday. Cenicola won 279 races as a trainer, including a pair of Grade 3 stakes — the 1988 San Simeon Handicap with Caballo de Oro and the 1992 Silver Screen Handicap with Natural Nine.

Out of Bounds rallied in the stretch to beat 1-2 favorite Secret Circle by a half-length in the $100,000 Sham Stakes, the first Kentucky Derby prep of the season at Santa Anita on Saturday.
