David Milch had the script for a horse racing drama kicking around in his head for 30 years. The screenwriter and producer was just too busy living it to put words to paper. As a 6-year-old, Milch first accompanied his father to the racetrack in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was too young to wager, but Milch’s father worked things out anyway.

Hearts on Fire edged Quest for Success by a neck Thursday in the $41,000 feature race for fillies and mares at Oaklawn Park. Ridden by Alex Birzer, Hearts on Fire ran 6 furlongs in 1:13.92 and paid $14.20, $6 and $5.20. Quest for Success returned $4.40 and $3.40, and Bent Missile paid $3.60 to show.

Rachel Alexandra and her first foal are “doing well” a day after the 2009 Horse of the Year gave birth to a bay colt. The Breeders’ Cup Classic is coming to prime time for the first time. NBC Sports Group and the Breeders’ Cup have agreed to a multiyear deal for the network to televise the two-day Breeders’ Cup World Championships beginning with the 2012 event at Santa Anita Park. This year, NBC Sports Network will televise the Breeders’ Cup races on Nov.

Aqueduct has canceled the Saturday card because of snow in the New York area. The feature, the $75,000 Evening Attire Stakes, has been rescheduled for Jan. 28. Both Aqueduct and Belmont Park remained open for simulcast wagering on out of town races.
