Tampa Bay cornerback Aqib Talib will miss the Buccaneers’ regular season opener after being suspended one game without pay for violating the NFL’s personal conduct policy. The third-year pro also was fined one additional game check stemming from Talib punching a cab driver in August 2009. The suspension was announced Tuesday, two days before the club’s preseason finale at Houston.

Chris Chelios, the longest-tenured defenseman in NHL history, is finally hanging up his skates. After 26 NHL seasons and three Stanley Cups, Chelios announced his retirement Tuesday at the age of 48. “I guess I’ve been dreading this day for a long time,” he said at a news conference in Detroit.

Connecticut’s Tina Charles has won the WNBA’s Rookie of the Year award, months after she was honored as the women’s college player of the year. Charles averaged more than 15 points and almost 12 rebounds a game for the Sun. Connecticut finished 17-17 and missed the playoffs for the second straight season.
