The first-place Texas Rangers acquired outfielder Jeff Francoeur for their playoff push Tuesday night, just hours before the deadline for players to be eligible for the postseason roster. The New York Mets traded Francoeur and cash to Texas for infielder Joaquin Arias, who was designated for assignment last week when Alex Cora was called up by the Rangers.

The Cuban defector made an eye-opening big league debut, topping out at 102 mph during his perfect inning, and the Reds added to their rapidly growing lead in the NL Central by beating the Milwaukee Brewers 8-4 on Tuesday night.

Ricky Romero and his Toronto teammates thoroughly enjoyed a big inning against the Tampa Bay Rays. Jose Bautista hit his major league-leading 43rd homer during a 10-run sixth inning and the Blue Jays beat Tampa Bay 13-5 on Tuesday night. “You love that,” said Romero, who pitched into the eighth inning for his 11th win.

Manny Ramirez grabbed one of his bats, waved it only the way he can, and simply stood in the on-deck circle. That was all the White Sox needed from him. With Ramirez waiting to make his debut for Chicago a few feet away, A.J. Pierzynski connected for a tiebreaking, three-run homer off Frank Herrmann in the ninth inning to lift the White Sox to a 4-3 win over the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday night.

Jose Bautista has hit his major league-leading 43rd homer during the Toronto Blue Jays’ 10-run sixth inning against the Tampa Bay Rays. Bautista’s three-run drive Tuesday night off reliever Lance Cormier capped the outburst and put the Blue Jays up 11-3. Aaron Hill had a two-run shot against Cormier.

The Seattle Seahawks surprisingly traded starting cornerback Josh Wilson to the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday in exchange for a conditional 2011 draft pick. Seahawks coach Pete Carroll said they felt there was enough depth at the position with Kelly Jennings and rookie Walter Thurmond that they could part with Wilson.

Mark Ingram’s run for a second Heisman Trophy has been put on hold, and possibly even derailed, before the Alabama tailback had a chance to gain a single yard. Ingram will miss No. 1 Alabama’s opener against San Jose State after injuring his left knee late in practice Monday, coach Nick Saban said Tuesday.

Derek Anderson will start at quarterback again for Arizona when the Cardinals play Washington on Thursday night in their final preseason game. Coach Ken Whisenhunt said he will use the same playing order as he did in last Saturday’s 14-9 win at Chicago. That means Matt Leinart will come in to replace Anderson at some point.
