Minnesota Twins leadoff man Denard Span hit a hard foul ball that struck his mom in the chest during Wednesday’s game. She was treated by paramedics and back in the stands minutes later. “My mom is feeling ok right now!” Span later posted on his Twitter account. Wanda Wilson was wearing a Span jersey and sitting with about 20 family members and friends near the third-base dugout.

Andretti Autosport owner Michael Andretti is teaming with Richard Petty to field a car for his cousin John Andretti in the Indianapolis 500. The deal with Petty and sponsor Window World, which fielded John Andretti’s car in last year’s race, starts with his May 1 debut at Kansas Speedway in the Izod IndyCar Series race.

Eskendereya has been made the 4-5 favorite for Saturday’s Wood Memorial at Aqueduct Racetrack, a final prep race before the Kentucky Derby. A field of six 3-year-olds was entered Wednesday for the 1 1/8-mile race that carries a purse of $750,000. Eskendereya comes into the Wood off a victory in the Fountain of Youth Stakes at Florida’s Gulfstream Park on Feb.

Tim Welsh was hired as men’s basketball coach at Hofstra on Wednesday. The former coach at Providence and Iona has spent the past two seasons as a commentator for ESPNU. The school has called a news conference for Thursday to introduce Welsh. Welsh replaces Tom Pecora, who took the job at Fordham last week.

Larranaga gets extension at George Mason (AP)

George Mason coach Jim Larranaga (lah-rah-NAY-guh) has signed a contract extension through the 2015-16 season. Larranaga’s new deal was announced Wednesday by the school. He led George Mason to a surprising Final Four berth in the 2006 NCAA tournament. Larranaga is the Patriots’ leader in men’s basketball coaching victories with a 246-157 record over the past 13 seasons.
