While the Pittsburgh Penguins are unbeaten in shootouts this season, Evgeni Malkin usually skips them. He's tried skating fast and skating slow, shooting backhanders and forehanders and between the pads, all with little success. Maybe beating the much-disliked Detroit Red Wings with an excellent move will change the reigning NHL scoring champion's outlook about one-on-one competition.

Soon after the school honored its 1960 national championship team, the 20th-ranked Ohio State Buckeyes showed they could play a little, too. William Buford scored a career-high 26 points and Evan Turner and Jon Diebler each had 19 to lead the Buckeyes past Minnesota 85-63 Sunday for their fifth win in six games.

Tennessee was down by a point with 25 seconds left when coach Bruce Pearl called a timeout to set up the Volunteers' final play. Scotty Hopson figured the ball would be in the hands of go-to post player Wayne Chism. Instead, Pearl made Chism the decoy this time and told Hopson to take the shot. "I'll get it if we're maybe down two and need a 3," Hopson said.

The Toronto Maple Leafs shook up their struggling club, acquiring defenseman Dion Phaneuf from the Calgary Flames in a seven-player deal Sunday and swapping goalies with Anaheim to get J.S. Giguere. Along with Phaneuf, Toronto received Keith Aulie and Fredrik Sjostrom from Calgary in exchange for Ian White, Matt Stajan, Nick Hagman and Jamal Mayers.

Former NFL star Herschel Walker stopped Hungarian fighter Greg Nagy in the third round Saturday night to win his mixed-martial arts debut. Walker drove Nagy into the fence early in the third. After a flurry of punches, referee Troy Waugh called the fight. "The experience was exciting," Walker said.
